New website for Dr. Audrey Kurth Cronin’s book: “How Terrorism Ends”

Dr. Audrey Kurth Cronin, a scholar associated with the National War College and Oxford University, was in need of a simple, elegant website to feature her new book, How Terrorism Ends.

In addition to reviews, audio interviews and publications associated with her book, Dr. Cronin also wanted to display her research data, containing variables for 457 case studies representing different terrorist groups.

Building the site on Joomla’s open source platform, howterrorismends.com uses a number of commercial and free components to achieve the simple, professional design. Building on Joomla Bamboo’s “Grid” framework on the front end and the Simpla template on the back-end, several additional components help to add design interest, including Captify Content (to display ‘praise for How Terrorism Ends’), Breadcrumbs Plus, the Phoca Favicon, and the 1PixelOut audio player. To display the large data set in sortable columns, we employed the commercial components from ArtData as well as Joomla EasyTable v3.

To enhance search engine optimization, the site uses a commercial SEF optimizer from Artio that allows the URL re-directs to be specified within the administrative back-end.

You can find more about her book by visiting the site, www.howterrorismends.com:

“Amid the fear following 9/11 and other recent terror attacks, it is easy to forget the most important fact about terrorist campaigns: they always come to an end–and often far more quickly than expected. Contrary to what many assume, when it comes to dealing with terrorism it may be more important to understand how it ends than how it begins. Only by understanding the common ways in which terrorist movements have died out or been eradicated in the past can we hope to figure out how to speed the decline of today’s terrorist groups, while avoiding unnecessary fears and costly overreactions. In How Terrorism Ends, Audrey Kurth Cronin examines how terrorist campaigns have met their demise over the past two centuries, and applies these enduring lessons to outline a new strategy against al-Qaeda.”

New Website Launched for Idaho State Senator Nicole LeFavour

Filed under: Online Marketing,social networking,webdesign — Whitney @ 6:32 pm | | Comments (0)

URL: http://www.4idaho.org

Nicole LeFavour 4idaho.orgBackground: Six years ago I designed candidate Nicole LeFavour’s website as she was running in her first primary for the Idaho District 19 House seat.  She is now a State Senator in the same district. I volunteered six years ago to design her website (it’s my way contributing to political campaigns that I support!). Back in 2004, we designed a static website mostly around the needs of the campaign, but as you can imagine, after 6 years the information on the site had outgrown its original structure. This winter, I volunteered to give the site a face-lift.

Result: Today, we revealed a new database-powered website built on the open-source Joomla content management system that will be easy for Senator LeFavour and her staff to maintain. The features include:

  • AddThis buttons on all the content pages to quickly share content with Facebook and social networking sites.
  • Twitter feed featured at the top of every page to keep visitors focused on the most recent announcements.
  • An event calendar integrated with Google Maps.
  • Streaming content from Nicole’s Typepad blog, “Notes From the Floor.”
  • Improved video content streamed from YouTube.
  • Google Analytics to track user experience and website traffic.
  • Easy email sign up forms to add to volunteer lists and email networking lists.
  • Interactive visitor polls to gauge constituent opinions on relevant political issues.
  • An administrator interface that makes updating and adding new content easy!

I hope Senator LeFavour and her constituents appreciate the new and improved website and look forward to assisting my Favour-ite Idaho politician in the legislative session ahead! Don’t forget to check out the site and send me your feedback!

Simple Website Management

I’ve just recently discovered the wonders of working with Joomla, the open source content management system that makes it easy to build professional sites in a fraction of the time you’d think. I wish I would have have taken the plunge into working with content management systems years ago, and I feel a little behind the curve, but at least I’ve arrived, right?

Talking with a colleague today, as we prepare to launch a new website for a national security law journal, we discussed implementing an e-commerce tool, managing comments, tags, creating “related content” boxes, and a host of other features that would have put me on the defensive me a few months ago — but knowing how easy these are to implement in a CMS like Joomla has me singing a different tune altogether!

I’m so excited at the prospect of learning how to adapt Joomla templates that I’m having to refrain from offering to build a free website for the next person who asks …

*Update 12/7/09:  Sorry folks, I found my next pro-bono project already. Might have room for another in February!
